The SVRI invites applications for bursaries to attend the SVRI Forum 2019 – the 6th international conference. SVRI Forum is the world’s key research conference on violence against women and other forms of violence driven by gender inequality in low and middle-income countries.

SVRI Forum 2019’s focus is on research working to understand and redress inequity among vulnerable populations to ensure no-one is left behind; research on violence against women and linkages to violence against children, realising the SDGs and research for social change and global movements. SVRI Forum is where researchers, policy-makers, funders and practitioners come together to design solutions for ending violence against women and girls. By participating in SVRI Forum you will build your knowledge, create collaborations, expand your network, and disseminate knowledge to key decision-makers in the field of violence against women.
The overall objectives of the bursaries are to:

• Ensure fair access, diversity, equity, and inclusion of researchers based in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) at the SVRI Forum 2019
• Foster a space for shared dialogue through networking at the conference
• Build capacity of young professionals to strengthen the quality of their work on violence against women, violence against children and other forms of violence driven by gender inequalities.

Bursaries

A limited number of full or partial bursaries are available. A bursary may cover all or some of the following:

• Registration fee for the conference (includes access to all sessions and exhibitions excluding pre-conference workshops);
  
• Travel (pre-paid airfare at the lowest fare available, from the nearest international airport);
  
• Accommodation close to the Cape Town Convention Centre;
  
• Modest daily living allowance of R120 per day for the duration of the conference (22-24 October).
  

This year the SVRI will support two types of bursaries to the Forum:

1. The SVRI Forum Young Professionals Programme:  The SVRI Young Professionals Programme provides an opportunity for young abstract submitters (aged 30 years and younger) based in low- and middle-income countries to receive guidance on developing their presentations for the conference, and where available, support attendance to the event. The programme is aimed at young researchers from resource limited settings who lack access to opportunities of attending conferences and delivering conference presentations.
2. Open Bursaries: A limited number of open bursaries are also available including bursaries that will support:
• SVRI Forum 2019 programme: This bursary will prioritise abstract presenters from LMICs for oral and science pitch presentations.
• SVRI Forum 2019 by attendance: This bursary is for general delegates attending the Forum. Please take note that preference will be given to delegates contributing to the SVRI Forum 2019 programme.
• Topic specific: Donor specific funded bursaries for professionals working on a specific topic, for example, psychological violence/emotional abuse.

Eligibility

• There is no age limit for the Open Bursaries. However, for the SVRI Forum Young Professionals Programme, applicants should be 30 years of age or younger.
• Applicants have submitted an abstract for SVRI Forum 2019.
  
• Applicants should preferably have published in grey or peer-reviewed literature, blogs, newspaper articles or articles/written pieces on social media.
  
• Applicants have not taken part in a previous SVRI Forum “Abstract Mentoring Programme” or received an open bursary in the past to attend the SVRI Forum.
  

Requirements

Before the SVRI Forum 2019:

1. Bursary recipients must have valid travel documents and are responsible for obtaining appropriate travel approvals to attend the conference. They must also cover the costs of their visas – unless agreed otherwise in advance with the conference organisers.
   
2. Bursary recipients may be held liable for any/all expense incurred if awardee does not attend the conference. Cancellations must be communicated 1 month before the event to avoid liability costs.
   
3. Priority will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries, with preference given to individuals in LMICs who have submitted an abstract that has been accepted for presentation at the Forum.
   
4. Bursary recipients must provide a letter from their organisations or institutions confirming that they can attend the conference.  (Self-employed recipients are not required to submit this).
   
5. Applications must include a short CV
   

During the SVRI Forum 2019:

6. Bursary recipients will be required to attend an opening meet and greet, and a post-conference discussion. More information will be provided by the conference organisers.
   
7. Bursary recipients will be asked to provide a blog post of their learning and experience at the SVRI Forum 2019 and provide a short-written summary of one or two parallel sessions at the Forum. Forum organisers will communicate directly with you in this regard.
   
8. Bursary recipients will be responsible for their own day to day expenses, travel insurance and costs incurred for this.
   
9. Bursary recipients will be required to act as SVRI Forum Ambassadors through live tweeting of sessions, and sharing posts and photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. A social media plan will be shared with you prior to the event.
   
10. Bursary recipients will receive Standards of Behaviour for the conference and will be expected to honour this.
    
11. The SVRI Forum organisers consider the safety and well-being of our bursary recipients a priority and regular debriefing will be organised. The Forum will offer delegates with spaces to reflect and referral services where needed. More information will be provided in information packs.
    

Application

• One support letter from the your organisation or institution where you are presently working or studying.
  
• In no more than one page or 500 words, please motivate:
  

• Why you should be considered for the Young Professionals Programme. Please give a short description of how attendance at the conference could build your networks; advance your career; and advance your knowledge or research in the area of violence against women, violence against children and other forms of violence driven by gender inequalities.

• What will you do at the Forum to achieve the above?
