One Planet Fellowship 2019 for African and European scientist leaders

One Planet Fellowship 2019 for African and European scientist leaders

Deadline: April 30, 2019.

Applications for the first cohort of the One Planet Fellowship are now open. The One Planet Fellowship seeks to build a vibrant, highly connected, and intergenerational network of African and European scientist leaders equipped to use a gender lens help Africa’s smallholder farmers adapt to a changing climate.

About

Creation of the Fellowship was announced at the inaugural One Planet Summit held in Paris in December 2017. Led by France’s President Macron, the One Planet Summit was convened to outline concrete steps by private and public sector actors working together to meet the objectives set by the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

At the 2017 Summit, 12 commitments consisting of 30 actions were made to intensify and accelerate global efforts to fight climate change. The One Planet Fellowship is Action no. 1 of Commitment no. 3 which focuses on mobilizing researchers and young people to work for the climate. The Fellowship will work to build the capacity of high-potential researchers from Africa and Europe to develop relevant, gender-responsive interventions towards climate change adaptation.

Inspired by the AWARD Fellowship Model, the USD 15 million five-year initiative seeks to invest in 600 agricultural scientists through three rounds of open competition. Selected candidates will participate in an intensive, non-residential, career acceleration process aimed at fostering leadership skills, strengthening scientific research skills including integrating gender into their research, and catalyzing research partnerships and networks. Candidates who complete the three-year process will become One Planet Laureates.
